DIMAPUR — Alemla Samuel, a resident of Naga United village in Dimapur district, has adopted rabbit farming under the NEH Programme, supported by the ICAR-Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI), Avikanagar, in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema.
According to an update, the initiative provided high-quality breeding rabbits, scientifically designed cages, nutritious feed, and specialised technical training.
Samuel has since established a "zero waste" circular economy. By raising kits, she has secured a source of lean, high-protein "healthy meat" for her household. Additionally, she utilises rabbit manure to revitalise her backyard kitchen garden.
To foster collective growth, a Rabbit Farmer Interest Group (FIG) was formed in the village to allow local farmers to share knowledge and resources.
The project is guided by Dr. Arun Tomar, director of ICAR-CSWRI, and Dr. Ranjeet Godara, NEH coordinator, while Dr. Phool Kumari and Dr. Ebibeni, NEH co-coordinators from KVK Dimapur, conduct field visits.
