Dimapur, March 7

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has denounced the March 5 incident in Dimapur where a person accused of rape was lynched by a mob. The KMSS, a farmers’ organization based in Assam led by reputed north eastern RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, issued a press release on Saturday calling for ‘restoration of faith’ in people of other communities living in Nagaland.
“The (KMSS) condemns barbaric attack on jail inmate in Dimapur. The KMSS strongly condemns the recent attack on Sharifuddin, a resident of Karimganj district of Assam who was allegedly arrested by Nagaland police in case of rape,” the organization stated. “The KMSS condemns any case of rape and believes that punishment should be given to convicted people.”However, the organization stated, the recent incident involving the unfortunate death of Sharifuddin only indicates “how vulnerable people of Assam in Nagaland.”
“There are regular reports of threats to business community from Assam in Nagaland. The KMSS strongly appeals to Nagaland government to ensure safety of people from Assam in Nagaland,” it stated.
The KMSS also condemned what it stated was the “unfounded claim of the accused person as being identified as of Bangladeshi origin whereas his father and family members have either served or serving in various position of Indian government.”
Such claims are ‘undemocratic and irrational and will create distance between Naga and the Assamese community,’ the organization stated in its press release.
“The KMSS strongly believes that the some criminals did such acts and the Naga society cannot be blamed for this. The KMSS appeals the Naga civil society to restore faith among various communities living in Nagaland,” the KMSS added.
