Imphal, Jan. 20: Security has been tightened in Manipur with security personnel conducting random checking and frisking in and around the state’s capital, Imphal, ahead of the Republic Day celebrations and forthcoming assembly polls.
The district police also conducted regular combing operations in and around Imphal town since the past five-six days to flush out underground elements. On Friday, widespread combing operations were conducted by the state police commandoes at Hatta area, Nagaram, Tangkhul Avenue, and Thongju areas. Similar search operations were also conducted at Toubul area on Thursday.
As part of intensified security measures, mopping operations were conducted in the busy junctions and roads of Imphal market areas.
Those who failed to produce valid identity documents were detained for verification at police stations. In the trouble-torn state of Manipur, various armed groups have been boycotting Republic Day celebrations each year. As a result, security measures are taken to prevent unwanted incidents when the state celebrates Republic Day.
The security is also to ensure that the administrations can undertake poll-related activities for the forthcoming 11th State Assembly elections which is scheduled to be held on March 4 and 8 next.
