WOKHA — Advisor for School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, on Tuesday inaugurated the new building of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Wokha, constructed under Samagra Shiksha, Nagaland, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the district's educational infrastructure.

Highlighting the need to change perceptions about government schools, Dr. Yhome said education must be treated as a collective responsibility. He informed that efforts are underway to upgrade GHSS Wokha into a composite school to improve enrolment and academic performance.
He also cautioned against mismanagement and misuse of funds, calling for civil society participation to restructure and strengthen the system.
The advisor further emphasised the government’s initiative to standardise schools across Nagaland in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, ensuring better infrastructure, quality teaching, and equal opportunities. He encouraged the school authorities to document the institution’s long history and maintain alumni records.
Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, in his address, expressed satisfaction at the timely completion of the new building. He recalled the poor condition of the infrastructure during earlier visits and said the new facility would provide a conducive learning environment.
He urged teachers and school authorities to focus on academic performance and discipline, while also suggesting the formation of a strong alumni association to support the school’s growth.
Responding to media queries, Dr. Yhome reiterated the importance of safeguarding school land, noting that GHSS Wokha’s land was purchased outright many years ago.
He expressed concern over attempts at encroachment by present generations and maintained that schools cannot function with private residences inside their compounds. He warned that if encroachment persists, eviction measures involving civil administration and police may be necessary.
Citing similar issues in other districts, including Dimapur and Tuensang, Yhome underscored that school compounds must be protected at all costs to secure the future of children.
The programme was chaired by Dr. N Janbemo Humtsoe, PGT, while the building was dedicated by Zurenthung Humtsoe, Assistant Pastor, WTBC. District officials, education department representatives, school staff, students, and community members attended the event, welcoming the development as a step towards transforming GHSS Wokha into a centre of educational excellence.
