DIMAPUR — The Department of Soil and Water Conservation organised a social night on Sunday at Niathu Resort, Chümoukedima, which was attended by Imkong L Imchen, Advisor for Information and Public Relations and Soil and Water Conservation.
In his address, Imchen commended the Department of Soil and Water Conservation for its role in the state's development, noting that the department is celebrating over five decades of service since its establishment in 1968, stated a DIPR report.
He lauded the department's efforts in driving sustainable agricultural practices, water conservation, and soil management in Nagaland.
Highlighting the importance of the department’s role, Imchen acknowledged the work of its 793-strong team, which includes 370 ministerial and 423 technical staff, alongside 106 gazetted officers.
He emphasised how the department, equipped with advanced soil testing laboratories in every district, has made crucial advancements in providing farmers and agricultural workers with the support needed for soil testing and resource management.
The advisor further commended the department's initiative in establishing 17 meteorological observatories across Nagaland since 1989. This system, he said, plays a pivotal role in disaster preparedness and risk reduction in a state with diverse geographical and climate challenges.
On the issues posed by traditional jhum cultivation, water scarcity, and soil erosion, he stressed the department's continuous focus on these critical areas. The department's farmer training programs, he remarked, have successfully promoted sustainable agriculture and watershed management across the state.
Imchen also welcomed the department's collaboration with the Brahmaputra Board, underscoring the importance of such partnerships in bridging development gaps and enhancing conservation efforts.
The evening also featured a message from Dr. Ranbir Singh, chairman of the Brahmaputra Board under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, where he highlighted the importance of integrated water resources management and acknowledged the efforts of the government of Nagaland in promoting conservation practices that align with national water policies.
Following the formal addresses, the night continued with entertainment programmes, which showcased cultural performances.
