Wokha, June 25 (EMN): Describing the village chairmen as leaders at grassroots, advisor of Law and Justice and chairman of Wokha DPDB, Dr. Chumben Murry, urged the chairmen to adapt themselves with the fast technology advancement and accordingly tackle challenges of modern problems.

Addressing the 10th general conference of Wokha District Village Council Chairmen’s Association (WDVCCA) at Tiyi Hall in Wokha Town on Friday, Dr. Chumben called upon the chairmen to shoulder their responsibility and execute their duties for the benefit of the public and society. Besides, he called upon the leaders to set an example by maintaining cleanliness around them and ensuring proper disposal of wastes in their localities.

On the Naga political issue, he called upon all the political organisations to come together and work for a collective logical conclusion. He stated that the common aspiration should be pressed upon the GOI by all sections of society for the well being of Naga people.

Speaking on the Article 371 (A), Dr. Murry appreciated the magnanimity of the Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, for successfully compiling the customary law, which is now remaining to be recognised by the government of India. He called upon the people to support the state government in bringing out the customary laws that will help to identify the culture and practices.

While reminding that Naga people’s livelihood and their primary source of income is dependent on cultivation, he called the people to undertake farming not as a hobby but as the backbone of Naga economy.

Delivering the welcome address, the Lotha Hoho chairman, Mhondamo Ovung, briefed the congregation on how Nagaland statehood was achieved through the 16 point agreement with the 13th amendment of Indian Constitution on Article 371 (A) with effect from 1963. He was also reminded to act accordingly and execute the functioning of local self government.

Stating that power comes with responsibility, the deputy commissioner of Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, has called upon the village council chairmen and GBs to authenticate and execute their responsibilities with caution.

The invocation prayer was said by Fr. Ntonse John Lotha, priest in-charge of St. Peter Church, Longsa, while the presidential note was delivered by K Vandan Erui and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Benathung Odyuo, WDVCCA general secretary.
