Abducted driver, handyman rescued; two kidnappers held

DIMAPUR police arrested two persons in connection with the hijacking of a truck and kidnapping of its driver and handyman from Chumukedima area on January 6. They have also rescued the abducted driver and handyman.
The arrested have been identified as Atoka Achumi, 21, son of Pukhato Achumi of Awotsakilimi village under Zunheboto district, presently residing at Chumukedima, Ward-10 and Sabu Uddin, 31, son of Abdul Nour of Doboka, Nagaon district in Assam, presently residing at Chumukedima, Ward-2. One .32 pistol along with two live rounds of ammunition were recovered from their possession. Addl. Superintendent of Police/PRO Dimapur, in a release today, quoting reliable source said on the evening of January 6, some occupants of an unregistered Gypsy had hijacked a truck from near Patkai bridge and were coming down towards Dimapur.
A police party swung into action immediately and intercepted the truck in Chumukedima town. However, on seeing the police, the person driving the truck abandoned it and escaped under the cover of darkness. The truck (MN01/8997) was taken to Diphupar PS for safe custody.
At around 8.30 pm the same night, one unregistered Gypsy was found heading towards Dimapur in a very high speed. The police party gave it a chase and after a few distance away the occupants of the Gypsy fired a shot, prompting the police to fire back. In the process, the Gypsy was intercepted and stopped leading to the arrest of the two persons. Both the accused persons confessed to the crime and revealed the place where they had held the kidnapped driver and handyman of the truck. Accordingly, the police rescued the kidnapped duo.
The truck loaded with potatoes and onions were also released. A criminal case has been registered in this connection and investigation is on to nab the other absconding accused, the release added.
