Dimapur, October 29 : The governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, isn’t too happy that the International Trade Centre (ITC) at the Indo-Myanmar border near Mon district is more of a shell than an actual business centre as its designation declares.
He stopped briefly at the ITC en route to Longwa village in Mon district to inaugurate the chief Angh’s residence and tourism guest house on October 28 then, a note from the governor’s establishment informed on Saturday.
“Acharya expressed his displeasure on finding almost abandoned infrastructure where domesticated animals have occupied to make it as their shelter,” the note explained.
Local MLA, Phowang, who represents the area, also accompanied the governor.
On being queried, Phowang was quoted as having said that “in spite of many attempts” there had had to be any “headway” due to the ‘lackadaisical response from both the state and the central government on revamping the ITC. The centre was established in 1996 and inaugurated in 2006 to “have border trade” with neighbouring Myanmar.
Acharya is said to have advised the MLA and the public of said area to “pursue for resumption” of the centre seriously. Any trade centre should have brisk activities; these ITCs should be no less as it will benefit the people residing in the border areas of India and Myanmar, he was quoted as having said.
Also, to boost the morale of the armed forces, Acharya also visited Delta Company of the 35th Assam Rifles at the border. He had brief interactions with the officers and the troops.
“Acharya while thanking the armed forces for safeguarding the border and the country also urged the company commander to initiate public welfare schemes under army project to benefit the people of the border area,” the press release stated.
