Don Cannoli is no mere baker; his pastry is the stuff of legend and people queue for hours for a bite of his cakes.

And his exploits feature in the book “The Best Baker in the World”, which is a wild and whimsical tale for children that takes on one of the greatest films ever made “The Godfather”.

Written entirely in limericks, the book is author Raja Sen’s tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece “The Godfather”.

Cannolis are Italian pastries of the Sicily region. There are also dialogues in “The Godfather” about it – A woman telling his henchman husband “Don’t forget the cannoli” as also the famous line when the henchman asks his sidekick “Leave the gun – take the cannoli”.

Everyone adores Don Cannoli and none would refuse what he bakes. One day, something dramatic happens, and this means big trouble. Don had a fall and doctors advised him total bed rest. Now it’s up to the Don’s children to save the day. With the big cake-off competition round the corner, can the kids rally around in time to uphold the family name?

And who can possibly fit into the Don’s oversized apron? Finally, it was son Michael who won the championship ring.

All the characters in the book are inspired by those in the film.

The book, published by Puffin India, is film critic Sen’s debut work. The illustrations are by Vishal K Bharadwaj.
