‘Ved’ set to cross Rs 50 crore-mark at box office; Riteish Deshmukh-starrer continues to pull audience

Bengaluru, Jan. 14 (EMN): At a time when Bollywood filmmakers are have a hard time with many movies failing to do well at the box office, a small-budget Marathi film titled “Ved” has come out with flying colours.

“Ved”, which has Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia D’Souza, Ashok Saraf, and Jiya Shankar in the lead roles, has been doing exceptionally well at the Maharashtra box office, collecting more than Rs 40 crore since its release on December 30.

The romantic drama, which also marked Riteish Deshmukh’s directorial debut, collected around Rs 2.5 crore on the first day, before positive reviews helped it to rake in around Rs 10 crore in its first weekend and around Rs 20 crore during the first week.

The industry insiders were of the opinion that “Ved” box office collection slow down after crossing Rs 25 crore-mark but the movie continued to pull in the audience to theatres.

“Ved” added Rs 20 crore to its revenue in the second week, thus taking collection till Thursday (January 12) to about Rs 40.85 crore. Trade trackers were of the opinion that the movie has the potential to collect Rs 10-12 crore in Maharashtra alone, which means it may soon cross Rs 50 crore-mark.

Popular film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh also tweeted that the movie is inching towards the half century-mark.

“Ved” is directed by Riteish Deshmukh and produced by his wife-actor Genelia D’Souza. It is a remake of Telugu film titled “’Majili” which was released in 2019.

It is to be seen if “Ved” will be dubbed in other languages like Rishab Shetty’s “Kantara” which was dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam following its success, helping it to earn over Rs 400 crore at the worldwide box office, including Rs 80 crore from the Hindi market.
