Manipur: JNIMS conducts first kidney transplant, CM announces INR 5 lakh award

Imphal, June 27 (EMN): Doctors of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Manipur successfully conducted kidney transplant for the first time in the state by a government run hospital, according to Prof. L Deben, Director of JNIMS.

Stating that the team of Mohan foundation, Chennai assisted in the successful conduct of the kidney transplant, Prof. Deben said, “This is the first kidney transplant operation done in a government run hospital in the state, and also the second in Northeast India after Guwahati Medical College in Assam”.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on Sunday announced a reward of INR 5 lakh to the team of doctors, nurses and other technical staff of the state run JNIMS who were involved. Singh made the announcement while briefing the media at JNIMS on Sunday.

Congratulating the doctors, nurses and others, Biren termed the first successful conduct of kidney transplant by government hospitals in Manipur as a huge achievement. He continued that many people of the state faced financial hardship for kidney transplant and as such the state government had taken up certain efforts under mission mode to upgrade the infrastructure and service of JNIMS.

Expressing his satisfaction that the kidney transplant for the three persons were conducted availing the benefit of Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana package for kidney transplant, he informed that the patients did not bear any expenses for the operation charges or medicines.
