Dimapur, May 16 (EMN): In the wake of incessant rains over the past few days, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued alert on the possibility of flash flooding and water logging due to heavy rains in the foothills sectors and lowlands parts of Nagaland.
In an update, the NSDMA informed that the state witnessed a spike in weather activity during the past week, with rainfall reaching 191.25mm in Dimapur, 351mm in Peren and 342mm in Kohima.
“Dhansari river and Chathe river may have large flow of water due to the prolonged spell of heavy rain in the hill sectors. The adjoining areas of these two rivers such as Domokhia area and the areas adjoining Dhansari river may be flooded. Landslide activity may also occur in some regions of the state due to the continued rainfall activity. There is a likelihood of road blockages in many parts of the state,” read the update.
“Departments and agencies who are responsible for maintaining public infrastructures and essential commodities are advised to make necessary arrangements and contingency plans to meet any eventualities during this period,” it added.
In its weather update for the upcoming days, the NSDMA said “Kohima and most other parts of Nagaland are also covered with the current monsoon incessant rains”.
“During this period, thunderstorm and lightning with widespread rainfall is expected in the districts of Peren, Kohima, Wokha, Mon and Tuensang. However, light to moderate rain/thundershowers is very likely to occur in remaining parts of the state which is likely to become intense,” read the forecast.
“These conditions call for sensitive weather condition for the entire state of Nagaland as there could be frequent spells of intermittent rain in the coming days. It is therefore important to take necessary precautionary measures during this time and exercise caution from lightning strikes and gale winds which may cause disruption in communication and connectivity,” it added.
The NSDMA has also urged the public to be vigilant during the monsoon- not to take shelter under large trees to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning or picnic near river banks to avoid flash floods. It went on to request all the DDMAs and line departments responsible for attending to emergencies caused by natural calamities, to be on alert and save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
