Imphal, May 6 (EMN): A month-long campaign to protect and conserve the environment, popularly known as ‘Mahousa Ima Ningsing Tha’ (month to remember mother nature) of Royal Riders Manipur (RRM) was formally launched with tree plantation activities on Friday.
Power, Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh attended the formal launching programme and flagged off a motorcycle rally from WAL Club ground in Imphal East district in the morning.
The day’s event was organised to commemorate the 12th edition of Mahousa Ima Ningsing in connection with World Environment Day 2022 on the UN theme “Only one Earth”. The campaign will cover three districts.
Addressing the gathering prior to the flag-off event, Singh encouraged the people to think and sustainably preserve the natural resources for the future generation. Emphasising that for the last twenty years, society has only focused on the cure of the effects of climate change without taking up the preventive measures to sustain nature, he said, ‘Nature has given us many resources and we should try to safeguard those limited resources as our primary duty’.
He also appealed to the youths to make preservation and conservation of nature as their priority and take part in planting trees and spread awareness to the local people to prevent the fast degrading natural environment.
The minister also assured that assistance will be provided in any initiatives taken up in safeguarding the environment by RRM.
Later, the minister also flagged off the teams of RRM that will conduct tree activities at Andro in Imphal East, CI college in Bishnupur and Kangchup Chiru in Kangpokpi district.
RK Tombisana, President of RRM along with 150 Royal Riders from different clubs of Manipur participated in the opening ceremony function.
With the motto “Serving with adventure”, RRM is a group of Royal Enfield riders formed with the motive to undertake charity events related to health, environment, child rights, disaster, communal harmony besides art and culture to create a “good biker” image. They take up welfare programmes with their own contributions.
RRM with support of different NGs had been organising awareness campaign to save the environment by voluntarily participating in plantations and taking up activities to prevent pollution. The activity rose from their deep concern over the rise in temperature in the state.
This year, RRM will be organising another round of tree plantation in the Langol hill range and preparation of trails for eco-trekking under the guidance of forest range officers on May 8 followed by family camping and tree plantation at Lamdan hill range in Churachandpur district on May 14 and 15.
The RRM team will return to its office at Langol range foothill base camp in Imphal to initiate a eco-trekking at Langol hill range including the popular Punshilok forest in the western Imphal hills for the students on May 22.
