Dimapur, June 6 (EMN): Commemorating  Phom Day, community leaders from different parts of the state converged at Longleng town on Sunday and pledged to uphold peace in the land.

Phom community observes the day every year on June 6. Phom Day was instituted on June 6, 1952, under the leadership of Hamnyei and Yongtau along with many Phom intellectual leaders from different villages. It was on this day, the Phom community pledged to stop headhunting, killing, and attacking rival villages, a DIPR report stated.

Speaking on the occasion, president of Phom People’s Council (PPC) M Shami Angh stated that Phom Day is celebrated to acknowledge the wise decision of the forefathers, who decided to stop head hunting and chose peace for growth and development.

Angh, who was also the special guest of the programme, credited the forefathers for enabling them to live in peace and harmony today. He added that without peace, they would not be able to do anything.

In order to treasure the “Peace Day,” Angh stated that it should be the responsibility of everyone to love the neighbouring villages and care for one another. He also urged the community to strive to do good and work for the welfare of the people.

In order to bring change and progress in the land through peace, Angh also called upon the young educated Phom intellectuals to come forward with a dedicated and loving heart to lead the Phom society.
