KOHIMA — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday inaugurated the 9th edition of Captain N Kengurüse, MVC Memorial Football Tournament at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. The event is organised by the Spear Corps and Assam Rifles in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association (NFA).
In his address, Rio said that the tournament, held in memory of Captain N Kengurüse (MVC), stands as a symbol of bravery, discipline, teamwork, and dedication to duty.
He noted that football continues to occupy a cherished place in Nagaland’s culture, uniting communities and shaping youth character through values that go beyond the field.

The chief minister encouraged participating teams to play with integrity and respect, adding that the state government is committed to strengthening sports infrastructure by developing astro-turf grounds in all districts.
“Football is creating opportunities and generating employment across several sectors. It has become an essential driver of Nagaland’s growing creative economy,” he said, while announcing that the second season of the Naga Super League will soon commence with more teams and matches.
General Officer Commanding, Spear Corps Lt. Gen. Abhijit S Pendharkar, recalled Captain Kengurüse’s legacy of valour and sacrifice, while the martyr’s father, Neiselie Kengurüse, conveyed gratitude to organisers, players, and supporters.
In the opening match, Adroit Boys Sechü Zubza (Kohima) edged Tehok FC (Mon) 1–0. The tournament, featuring 20 teams from across Nagaland, will continue till November 6.
