Kohima, March 1 (EMN): There are 99 colleges in Nagaland—including five universities, 50 private colleges, 15 government colleges, and 29 Bible colleges—granted no objection certificate by the department of Higher Education, according to the latest annual administrative report of the department.
The report, submitted during the third session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, classified those colleges and universities into various streams, including B.Ed/M.Ed, Arts, Science, Commerce etc.
Bachelor’s degree: Girls outnumber boys
In the year 2017-18, the total enrolment of private secular colleges was 21,827, with 11, 483 female and 10, 344 male students in Nagaland. The government college students’ enrolment in 2018-19 stood at 7, 968 with 3, 610 male and 4, 321 female students.
When divided stream-wise, the number of female students were more in Bachelor of Arts and B.Ed at both the private and government institutions, while the number of male students were ahead in other streams including science, commerce, LLB, BBA, BCA and others.
The total number of Arts students in private colleges is 15, 149, out of which 8,347 are female and 6, 802 male. As much as 5,485 are BA students out of which 7,968 total students are in government colleges. The report also showed a total of 3,171 science students (including M.Sc), 2540 commerce students in both the government and private colleges.
Govt. colleges’ staff: Grade IV (regular) is highest
The total number of employees in all the 15 government colleges is 635, in which grade IV regular staff constitutes the highest with 170 in total, as per the report.
Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung has the highest number of staff with a total of 98, from grade II to grade IV including regular, causal work-charge, and fixed pay employees, as of May 31, 2018. The college is the oldest secular college in the state, established in the year 1959.
Kohima Science College at Jotsoma came second with 96 employees. Meanwhile, the Mokokchung College of Teachers’ Education is the most recent government college in Nagaland, with least 19 employees.
