Dimapur, Feb. 17: A delayed report that was received here on Sunday has reported that an elderly man in Longleng district was electrocuted during the first week of February. Observers have attributed the tragedy to negligence of the electricity authorities. The incident is said to have happened at Sakshi village in Longleng district. It is informed that the deceased was an 85-year old man identified as a Mongnyei Phom, a former head gaon bura of the village. The incident is said to have occurred on Feb. 2 at around 2 pm.
The deceased was said to have died on the spot after coming in contact with the transformer.
According to members of the Sakshi Village Council, the 63KV transformer was installed just behind the house of the deceased, and that it had been without a fence for a very long time.
“The ‘jugali’ (person in charge or foreman) who was posted in Sakshi village has not visited the village ever since he left after submitting his joining report,” sources said. The village council has put the blame on ‘clear negligence’ of the electrical department.
