  • 70 tonnes garbage collected in second Senapati River cleanup

  • IMPHAL — The ‘Clean Senapati River Campaign’ collected around 70 tonnes of garbage along an 8km stretch of the river flowing through Senapati district's headquarters.

  • The cleanup, part of the second mass drive in February-March 2025, covered areas from Mt. Everest College parking to Kathikho Karong.

  • The Karong Senapati Town Committee launched the first phase of river cleaning in October-November 2024.

  • This came to light during a follow- up meeting on ‘Clean Senapati River Campaign’ held on Monday and chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, Mamoni Doley.

  • The meeting was attended by Additional District Magistrate Rang David Kung, Chief Executive Officer/ADC Adahrii Maheo, Project Director (DRDA) PP Ronald, Additional SP Thangkhochon  Haokip, CSOs, Karong Senapati Town Committee president and members, along with youth presidents of all localities and colonies.

  • The meeting deliberated on the construction of waste collection centres, rationalisation of waste collection routes, requirement of inventory, penalties for disposal of wastes into Senapati River, ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) and constitution of task force for the campaign.

  • Upon noticing a large dumping area under the Senapati Bridge, Doley said barricades had been installed at the major black spot and instructed village authorities to notify encroachers to halt riverside construction.

  • She informed that regular inspection will be carried by the task force along with the district administration and appealed to village authorities to identify land for waste collection centres under MGNREGA's Solid Waste Management scheme.

  • The DC further urged the stakeholder of the district to sensitise all the communities and keep the district clean.

  • During the eviction drives, the additional district magistrate said that around 70 illegal structures were dismantled.

  • Kung also informed that following the state-wide implementation of Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022, prohibition on sale of SUPs has been implemented.

  • He said that various awareness campaigns are being carried out through various platforms to sensitise the community.

  • He further informed that NH- 02 eviction drive will start soon and appealed to residents to remove illegal structures along the highway.

  • Panii Ngaonii, SDC Senapati, delivered a presentation on Solid Waste Management, educating attendees through an informative PPT.
