Wokha, 28 Nov. (EMN): The sixth edition of Late Emi Shitiri Memorial women’s football and volleyball open tournament, culminated on Monday with Ajit Kumar Ranjan, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, as the closing ceremony special guest.
He appreciated the Wokha District Women Sports Association (WDWSA) for their efforts in successfully organising such an event.
He said that today, women are excelling in various sports fields, adding that it was necessary to encourage women and give due effort for women’s participation in sports.
Ranjan said that it was not just a game played on the ground but it reflected the attitude towards women. He said that a strong woman is the foundation of a strong, stable and progressive society, citing examples of developed countries where women are given due regard, and therefore considered ‘advanced nations’.
He also acknowledged that many states in India are now giving women due respect, and are seen progressing and at the forefront of economy, sports, art and culture. He appreciated the effort of WDWSA stating that this is the only district in Nagaland that has organised such an initiative, adding that such actions should be replicated at the state level.
He further said women should be given opportunities and provided platforms to showcase their talent, so that they can represent their district and the state. He said that sports in Nagaland require a lot of infrastructural support and if women come forward and demand their needs, he expressed optimism that they will receive necessary support and attention.
Stating that sports is to be considered as part of education and society building, he appreciated the WDWSA for conducting a sports event in the district and assured to contribute assistance towards conducting such events in the coming days.
In the final volleyball match of the tournament, Team Ace Peren defeated Pangti Village Women Sports’ Association 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14.
In football match played between IG Sports Academy, Kohima and Pangti Village Women Sports Association, the former trashed the latter 2-0, where Imlie Merenla, the captain of IG Sports Academy, Kohima scored the first goal in the first half and second goal came from the boots of Akhala in the final minute of the final match.
