Dimapur, Jan. 4 (EMN):
In what could be taken as growing concern among parents for their children’s education following the closure of educational institutions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, at least 69% of them are in favour reopening schools from April 2021 session as against 34% in September last year, according to a survey.

A total of 19,000 parents from 224 districts across India were interview in the survey, which was conducted by online platform Localcircles to know if hesitancy level of parents for reopening of schools has changed in the aftermath of declining Covid-19 caseloads in India and the possible availability of Covid-19 vaccine in the next few weeks.

“Notably, 69% of parents said given the current trends and situation with Covid, schools in India should start from April 2021 or after. Further, 23% said it should start from January 1, 2021,” according to the survey, indicating that that the percentage of parents who want schools to open only in the next session has doubled in the last three months.

The survey went on to say that ‘only 26% Indian parents approve of their children receiving the Covid-19 vaccine if it is made available by April 2021, or before school session and that 56% of parents said they will wait three months or more, and then consider based on data or findings’, while 12% responded in the negative’.

It may be mentioned that schools and colleges across the country were closed in March 2020 as a measure to contain the spread of Covid-19. Several states, including Nagaland have allowed schools to reopen partially while others are yet to take such a decision due to increase in the number coronavirus cases. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has also requested its affiliated schools to reopen from January 4 in view of the upcoming ICSE board examinations.
