DIMAPUR — Dimapur district has recorded six cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in July, according to District Vector Borne Diseases (DVBD) consultant, Peter Sangtam.

Sangtam said that three of the six cases were detected within Dimapur’s urban areas and one case each from Purana Bazaar and Dhansiripar. Another case originated in Assam but was diagnosed in Dimapur.

All the six patients are currently receiving treatment outside of Nagaland, he added.

Sangtam also noted that no dengue cases have been reported in Dimapur as of July 30. However, he cautioned that the likelihood of dengue cases emerging in the coming month is high.

Symptoms and prevention

Japanese Encephalitis typically manifests with a sudden onset of fever accompanied by altered mental status.

Preventive measures against JE include using mosquito nets and repellents to avoid bites. Stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, should be eliminated in and around homes.

As pigs play a significant role in the JE virus cycle by acting as amplifying hosts, rearing them in enclosed spaces away from human populations is crucial. Vaccination against JE is also available, and individuals can contact their nearest hospital for details. Seeking immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital is crucial for anyone exhibiting JE symptoms.
