The three-day 5th State Level Govt. Higher Inter District Secondary Schools and Govt. High Schools Tournament kicked off today at Jalukie Town Govt. Higher Secondary School. Teams from all the eleven district of Nagaland are participating in the tournament.
Minister of Planning & Coordination, Evaluation, Geology and Mining, TR Zeliang graced the opening ceremony as the chief guest.
Addressing the participants, TR Zeliang called upon the young participants to dedicate and work hard to become excellent sportspersons.
He said sports scenario has completely changed today. Earlier, games and sports were played just for fun and leisure but today sports is emerging as one of the most prospective industry in terms of income generation, employment opportunity, tourism promotion, health care etc, he stated.
Successful sportspersons are well respected and honoured by the community, nation and the world for their discipline and the laurel that they bring home, he said. He also said to become successful sportsmen and sportswomen one must be able to perform better than their compatriot through sheer hard work, commitment and dedication or else there is place for mediocre in the present competitive world.
He further said to become excellent sportspersons only talent and interest alone will not help but it needs good health, proper training and exercise. He maintained that drug addiction, alcoholism and smoking are the main enemy of sportspersons and urged upon the youths to shun substances abuse.
Nagaland state, the minister said, is also a potential hub of games and sports as many of the Naga youths have participated in the national and international level. However, he expressed regret that the Naga youths lack consistency and dedication as such many of the talented youths could not fully utilize their potentials and let their talent go waste before they fully shine.
TR Zeliang also said the state government is serious in promoting sports in the State and assured that proper infrastructure will be provided to all the districts in order to harness and nurture the talents of Naga youths in the field of games and sports. He also urged upon the organizers to make an attempt to produce professional sportsmen and sportswomen in various disciplines of games and sports.
The brief inaugural function was marked by special song from students GHSS Jalukie. The welcome address was delivered by DEO Peren
