Kohima, June 1 (EMN): In a move to combat deforestation and rising climate emergencies, a plantation drive was held along the stretch of road from Nagaland Civil Secretariat area to Assembly Secretariat on Saturday in Kohima.
It was initiated by YouthNet in partnership with the state’s department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, on the theme: plant a tree, plant a hope for future.
Speaking on the theme, the Divisional Forest Officer of Kohima, Rongsenlemla Imchen said it is important to plant trees for the future. “Keeping the hope alive is equally important. One should be responsible to nurture and maintain whatever is planted,” she added.
The officer urged the participants to “do something productive today as tomorrow will take care of itself.”
While acknowledging YouthNet for the initiative, she said that Forest department would not hesitate to coordinate with any NGOs, and individuals who share similar vision.
Altogether, 500 tree saplings provided by the department were planted during the drive.
Participants included students from TM Government Higher Secondary School, Government Higher Secondary School Seikhazou, D Khel School Kohima, and team member from Nagaland Career & Development Centre, Nagaland Job Centre, Skill Development Trainees, Kohima, and YouthNet.
YouthNet will be responsible for maintaining and nurturing the plants. Similar drives will be conducted once or twice a month, it was informed.
