5 persons killed as violence returns to Manipur
IMPHAL — The latest round of violence in Manipur has reportedly claimed five lives in Jiribam district on Saturday even as authorities responded by clamping prohibitive orders restricting the assembly of more than five people and carrying of arms and ammunition.
The order will remain in force until further notice, according to the District Magistrate of Jiribam. This order comes after five persons were killed in Jiribam district, which borders Assam’s Cachar district—a day after an elderly man was killed in a rocket attack in Bishnupur district.
According to K Kabib, IGP (Intelligence) Manipur Police, suspected Kuki militants attacked Nunhchappi village in Jiribam district early Saturday morning in which one senior citizen was killed.

In Rasidpur village, the villagers retaliated to the miscreants’ shooting and one resident was killed, the IDP told a press conference on Saturday. When police rushed to the scene, they were also fired upon and a shout-out ensued.
Later on while searching the area, three bodies of suspected miscreants were found, he added.
The IGP informed that senior police officers were closely monitoring the situation and Army choppers have been deployed to conduct surveillance and patrolling.

Meanwhile normal life in the state, particularly business activities in Imphal, was severely affected after the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity called for an indefinite public curfew from September 6.
On Saturday, it demanded the resignation of Manipur DGP citing the latter’s alleged failure to address security concerns effectively.
