4th Kohima Town Inter-Ward Tournament underway

Our Correspondent KOHIMA, FEBRUARY 1 The 4th Kohima Town Inter-Ward Tournament commenced today at Kohima Local Ground under the theme ‘Unity and friendship through sports & music’. A total of 16 wards will be competing in men’s football, while 14 wards will take part in women’s volleyball during the six-day tournament which will conclude on February 6. There will also be inter-ward singing competition for women on February 3 evening at State Academy Hall, Kohima, at 5 pm, while the singing competition for bands is scheduled on February 4 & 5 evening at the same venue. The inaugural function was graced by Vikheho Swu, Minister for Roads & Bridges as the chief guest. In his address, Swu urged the sportspersons to take up sports not only for recreation alone, but to partake with commitment and sincerity so as to make a career out of it. He reminded the gathering about the success of our neighbouring States Assam and Manipur whose players have been doing exceptionally well in sports over the last decade. Speaking to a host of youth leaders and members of the wards under Kohima town, Swu also encouraged them to actively participate in the Swachh Bharat campaign initiated by the Government of India. He underscored the need for the respective colonies to initiate new measures to keep the capital city neat and clean and further towards making Kohima town an ideal place to live in. Local MLA, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire said the inter-ward competition is not a political agenda, but an initiative to bring the Kohima denizens together. He went on to say that games and sports promote friendship and bring people together. The function commenced with invocation pronounced by Dr. Keny Tsela, pastor, Rengma Baptist Church, Kohima, while Zotuo Kire, president, NPF 9th KohimaTown A/C delivered the welcome address. A special number was presented by Sulivi Assumi. The programme was chaired by Xavier Rutsa. The inaugural function was also attended by legislators including Merentoshi Jamir, Khriehu Liezietsu, Pukhayi Sema, Dr. Neiphrezo Keditsu, Toyang Chang, among others.
