3rd Inter Departmental Tournament underway

The 3rd Inter Departmental Tournament 2014 got underway today at Officers’ Club, Mon with MLA & Chairman NKVIB, Y.M. Yollow Konyak gracing the opening ceremony as the chief guest. The tournament is being organized by the Officers’ Club, Mon. In his inaugural speech, the chief guest thanked and appreciated the Government officers of Mon for organizing the tournament and other social activities for development of the people. Asserting that posting and transferred of officers to Mon is considered as punishment by some officers, he said such negative mindset should be ignored and exhorted them to have a memorable era of good time of working together as a team to provide better service to the people.
He said sports not only keeps physically and mentally healthy but also advocate unity, bond of friendship and mutual understanding leading to peace and prosperity of the society. Therefore he appealed to the Officers’ Club to continue with the good team work and leave behind a legacy of peace and development during their short stay to Mon.
In her keynote address, the Deputy Commissioner, Mon Angau I Thou IAS, who is also the president of the Officers’ Club, said that Officers’ Club was revived in a meeting convened on 10th May 2008 taking into account the need for a common platform to further the interest of the Government Officers stationed at Mon, the need to interact and share ideas and opinions for better governance and contribute towards the common good of the society and the district.
Informing that daily badminton games in the evening at the Officers’ Club is the only platform where the officers get to mingle and interact with one another, thereby promoting a sense of oneness and belonging, leading to bonds of friendship, fellowship, coordination and mutual understanding and added ‘today, this bond has reduced situations of awkwardness and embarrassments amongst the many Government departments and agencies’.
She also briefed on the activities undertaken by the Club, and appreciated the Vodafone, Airtel, Coal Miners Union Naginimora, Cotton County, DPDB, NGOs, Government Departments, Officers and individuals for their assistance and contributions towards Officers’ Club. She also lauded Dr. Chenjei Konyak and his band for composing the “Officers Club Mon Anthem”.
Altogether 53 departments with 224 participants are participating in various categories for competitions in Table Tennis, Carrom, Men & women Open (Badminton).
It may be mentioned that the First Inter Departmental Tournament was held in 2012 for badminton only and 31 departments participated, while in the 2nd year Carrom competition was included as another category for competition and 47 departments participated in the tournament. This year 53 departments are participating and Table Tennis was included as another category for competition besides Badminton and Carrom.
Earlier, the Gymnasium was dedicated by Chemyuh, Executive Secretary KBBB and inaugurated by the chief guest. The Programme was invoked by Rev. J. Tenwang Konyak, District Chaplain and Dr. Esther Konyak, Assistant Professor, Wangkhao College, Mon chaired the programme.
