37th State Open Badminton Championship gets underway

Dimapur, August 6

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he 37th Inter District & State Open badminton Championship got off to a colorful start at the newly inaugurated indoor stadium in Wokha on Tuesday.Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Minister for Forest and Border Affairs Y Patton graced the inaugural function of the championship as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
Rio, while addressing the gathering at the inaugural programme, said the government has framed youth policy and sports policy. He also said badminton has been selected as a priority game to be supported by government.
Stating that sports is one arena where one can become a celebrity overnight and where there is pride and fame, the CM urged the players to be disciplined and have determination and dedication to become someone.
“To achieve National and International prizes, it is time to retrospect and re-strategize our approach to reach higher level,” he said. Realizing all this, the government has been according importance to youth, particularly in sports sector, he added.
Rio also assured that the government will continue to create facility to support sportspersons and urged them to put in more efforts to excel and bring laurels for the State.
Observing that the indoor stadium has been completed late but not too late, he lauded the effort of the Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Vyasan R and every person involved for successful completion of the stadium. He also congratulated the Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA) for organizing the tournament for the 37th time and Wokha District Badminton Association (WDBA) for hosting the event.
Patton in his speech said Wokha district is privileged to have such a beautiful auditorium after so many years of longing. This was possible because of the generous contribution from the Chief Minister, he added.
He was optimistic that the availability of stadium of this standard will definitely boost the morale of the game lovers in the district and promote the upcoming youngster in indoor games as well.
Players from ten districts and Nagaland Police Team are participating in the prestigious event. Last year’s Junior Boys and Girls Champions Tali Akum and Tepika were presented Yonex kits by the Chief Minister on the occasion. The kits was sponsored by the Nagaland badminton Association.
