MOKOKCHUNG — The 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2023, organised by Kumlong Sporting Association under the aegis of Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), got underway on Wednesday at Mokokchung’s Multi-Purpose Sport Complex.

Temjenmenba, advisor for Transport and Technical Education, was the guest of honour at the inaugural programme.

Addressing the gathering, the advisor said sports is one of the most lucrative sectors in the world today and, therefore, urged all the players to take sports seriously and to be dedicated to their passion so that they can reach a higher level of excellence.

He, however, maintained that to be a sportsman, one needs lots of discipline in order to succeed, which is also very relevant in every aspect of life.

Asserting that jobs in the government sector are saturated, he said sport is one alternative to earning a livelihood. He further urged the citizens of Mokokchung town to support the entire tournament to encourage the players.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Imlinichet Imchen, convenor of the organising committee, stated that the Kumlong Sports Association was founded in 2016 with the motto ‘forging champions’ to promote sports by giving young talents a platform.

This year’s tournament features 9 wards. The winner of the 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2023 will also receive a wild card entry into the 16th Imchaba Memorial Open Volleyball Trophy, which will be held in September 2023 and organised by MDVA.

The catch is that if the champion misses the bus, the second runner-up will be eligible for the wild card entry, according to a MoU signed by MDVA and Kumlong Sporting Association.

Meanwhile, the first match featured a close battle between defending champion Sungkomen and Mongsenbai ward.

The sturdier Mongsenbai ward won the first set 25-17, but Sungkomen made a strong comeback in the second set by 30-28, forcing a deciding set in which Sungkomen won by 25-14, their first win of the tournament.
