A joint team of Kohima police today conducted a surprise raid in all the public outlets to check the illicit sale and purchase of unverified pre-paid/ post paid/ pre-activated SIM cards.
According to a release issued by Sub-Divisional Police Officer & PRO, Atu Zumvü, NPS, Kohima police comprising north police station, south police station and women cell jointly raided in the interest of national security and public interest as it is causing serious security threat to the citizens and posing immense difficulties for the law enforcement agency in tracing subscribers identity and address whenever complaints are received at police stations from the aggrieved person(s).During the raid, 17 persons were arrested from north police station jurisdiction, while 7 persons were arrested from south police station jurisdiction and altogether 827 SIM cards were seized from their possessions for violation/non-observance of norms/regulations and guidelines as well as rampant flouting of norms relating to the subject matter.
The total number of 24 arrested persons comprising 18 males and 6 females has been identified. The total seizures of the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards of various service providers are classified as under;
1. BSNL - 51
2. Airtel - 154
3. Aircel - 194
4. Vodafone - 207
5. Reliance - 100
6. Idea Cellular - 121
Total - 827
The release said, a regular case vide North P.S Kohima Case No. 0008/2015 U/S 188 IPC and South P.S Kohima Case No. 0010/2015 U/S 188 IPC has been registered in this connection and the arrested accused persons remanded into judicial custody.
