WOKHA — Two men from Old Riphyim village in Wokha district drowned at Doyang dam on Monday around 12:30 pm.

The tragic incident occurred when the two men, identified as Elanthung Ngullie (20) and Thungchio Patton (24), were returning after collecting their weekly rations for labourers working on hut construction near the Tourist Resort at Doyang Dam.

The canoe carrying five people, including the victims, reportedly capsized during the trip back to their base. Three of the occupants managed to escape but Elanthung and Thungchio unfortunately drowned.

Police informed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have been deployed to conduct search operations, but the bodies of the victims could not be recovered despite their best efforts. Search operations have been called off for Monday.

The rescue operation will resume on Tuesday with assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team from Kohima.
