Accused befriended minor girl through Facebook; police says ‘motive’ yet to establish

Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo on Friday informed that one Yilobemo Mozhui, 19, has confessed to the murder of a minor girl on the evening of October 21. The body was discovered the following morning, at St. Clare Higher Secondary School in Phevima at Kacharigaon, Dimapur.

Briefing reporters on several issues related to crime in the district at the Commissioner of Police’s office in Dimapur, Tetseo said that the body of the minor girl has been handed over to the family after post mortem, and the results are awaited.

He said that they got the information about the incident around 8 am on Thursday and after the identification of the dead body, the district police arrested Mozhui from his residence in Senjum village ‘within six hours’.

It was informed that Mozhui had studied at St. Clare Higher Secondary School and is currently pursuing theology.

According to preliminary investigation, the accused had befriended the victim on Facebook and convinced her to go for an ‘evening walk’ on that fateful day.

Tetseo also informed that the motive has not been established clearly as investigation is still in the preliminary stage.

Parents held for daughter’s death

In another incident at Shokhuvi village, Chümoukedima Police received information on October 22 that a 14-year-old girl had committed suicide.

The FIR lodged by her parents was ‘suspicious,’ the police informed; and during the course of investigation, it was found out the death was planned by her parents, Muhammad Islam and his wife, who are from Morigoan in Assam and residing at Shokhuvi village.

Both of them are under police custody and the case is under investigation, he said.

EITA provided security 24x7

The commissioner of police also spoke about the ‘forced closure’ of the East India Transport Agency (EITA) Dimapur on October 19. He informed that the EITA is presently functioning and has been provided police security 24x7.

He added that the case is under investigation.

In another update related to the raid of a liquor manufacturing unit by the security forces on September 2, Tetseo informed that four persons have been arrested till date, while the interrogation of one more is awaited as the person is outside the country, though a summon has been issued.

The police commissioner, however, maintained that it is not an absconding case as he has been stuck there (outside India) due to the pandemic and ‘the case will have a clear perspective’ only after getting his statement.

During the interaction with the media, Tetseo also gave a brief statistical report about extortion cases from January 1 till date. He informed that 78 cases have been registered by the police and 127 persons have been arrested, out of which 60 belong to different Naga political groups.

He also informed that they have recovered 58 arms, 3484 rounds of ammunition, INR 1,62,90,890 (approximately INR 1.62 crore) in cash, four grenades, two PEK explosives, and nine detonators.

Further, Tetseo provided the weekly crime update: one Hanso Quicker was arrested from 4th Mile on October 19 while ‘extorting in the name of Khango-led NSC (K) ’. Cash amounting to INR 4400 along with work permit of NSCN-K were seized from his possession.

On October 20, Hevikhu Achumi, ‘khapur’ of GPRN/NSCN, was arrested from Burma Camp area. Work permit (7 nos) and ‘non-local ID card’ (1 nos) were seized from his possession.

The police commissioner further stated that from January 1 till date, 46,114 bottles of IMFL, 343 kg of ganja, 1,36,000 tablets of World’s Yours, 1.890 kg of heroin, 210 Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine capsules and 2,926 bottles of Codeine cough syrups have been seized.

In the past week, three persons namely Vishal Thapa, Mohit Kumar Singh and Akato Chophi were arrested under NLTP Act and 200 bottles of IMFL were found in their possession; and six kg of ganja was also recovered from one Ranodhir Ghosh under NDPS Act.
