Dimapur, Sep. 27 (EMN): In a startling revelation, Dimapur district registered 1407 child abuse cases during 2018-19 and 21.82% child loss in the corresponding years, according to a survey.

This was disclosed by Lozua Kape, Childline central co-ordinator, at a one-day awareness programme on the significance of child rights organised by SPATIAL Project under Can Youth, on September 26.

While introducing Childline to the participants, Kape remarked that ‘our society is not as good as it has been portrayed’. Sharing her experiences, she expressed the necessity for intervention of law enforcement in delivering the rights of children.

Stating that child abuse is one of the common forms of violation on child rights, she emphasised on the need to recognise various rights for a full development of an individual.

“Right is an entitlement. All rights are needs, but all needs cannot be translated into rights,” she reminded. Affirming that all human beings have rights, she stated that a child too has some special essential needs for survival and development.

Lamenting that children are not safe even in their own district and states, she encouraged the participants to come together as one and work towards delivering the needed rights to children. She was of view that every individual’s participation could contribute in creating awareness on such issues.

Kewidinwangliu Newmai, trainer of SPATIAL Project, concluded the session by expressing gratitude to the resource person and participants for their support and co-operation.

The programme was attended by the members of Dimapur Eastern Naga Students’ Union (DENSU) along with its units and interns of Can Youth.

Lairing Dau Jigdung, project coordinator, also briefed on the project and its endeavours towards enhancing quality education of the students by strengthening the teachers, school management committee and community leaders.
