Imphal, Oct. 1 (EMN): The 122nd birth anniversary of Jananeta Hijam Irabot, a a leading figure of the social reform movement and political agitations in Manipur in the period 1934-1947 was observed at No.1 Pipal Pukhuri Lanka, Hojai District in Assam on Sunday.
The event organised by the Manipur Kala Kristi Kendra was attended by the the minister for Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution, Revenue, Weight and Measures, Relief and Rehabilitation, Karam Shyam as the chief guest.
Speaking on the ocassion, the minister said a freedom fighter and social activist Jananeta Hijam Irabot’s outstanding contribution towards serving Manipur during his entire life span is unending and he goes in parallel with any of the public leaders of the country.
Shyam said that Irabot has imbibed since birth a true spirit of sacrifice that is one of the most important qualities of a leader.
A leader endowed with multi-faceted personality and great credibility, Irabot had served the poor and needy people of those days, he said. He is not below any of the leaders of the globe considering his works for the upliftment of the society and cause of humanity. He had contributed profoundly in varied fields ranging from sports, writing, drama, revolutionary to social transformation, he added.
“He turned revolutionary and carried out armed struggle against the government under the British Rule and laid his life at the Anggo Hills, the then Burma,” he recollected.
Irabot’s remarkable activities of supreme sacrifice for the cause of Manipur is indeed worth appreciating and I feel a sense of success and satisfaction in inaugurating the statue of Jananeta Irabot today, he asserted.
The minister unveiled the statue of Jananeta Hijam Irabot that was erected at the complex of the Manipur Kala Kristi Kendra. A souvenir titled Lamyanba was also released during the function.
