The Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC) has condemned election-related violent incidents being reported at 57 Thonoknyu Assembly Constituency in Noklak district over the past few days, saying that “there is no room for violence in democracy”.

In a press release issued a day after a clash between the supporters of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate L. Khumo and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate M. Benei Lamthiu at Thonoknyu headquarters left many injured and damaged several vehicles.

Reminding that election should be fought within the parameters of democracy and in the interest and welfare of the people, the KTC called upon “the election authorities, district administration and Police to take strict measures to ensure peaceful polling and also assure its full support in maintaining peaceful atmosphere throughout the electioneering process”.

It also appealed all the political parties to strictly adhere to the joint notification of KTC, Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU), and Khiamniungan Menyu Hoikam (KMH) for free and fair election in Noklak district.
