Mokokchung’s Rotary Club takes time out for literature

Rotary Club of Mokokchung today observed the Rotary Literacy Month on the theme ‘Back to School’ which was attended by Rotarian members, interact club members, teachers and students from different schools at Rotary House on Saturday evening here.Addressing the event the keynote speaker, Limasenla Jamir, who is a journalist, Asst professor at Jubilee Memorial College and a PhD researcher, said that Nagaland has recorded 7.14 percent school dropouts as per NCERT records.
She also pointed out that the common factors for dropouts were engagement in domestic and field works, lack of support from parents, poverty, shortage of teachers, discouraging school environment and lack of facilities in school, problem relating to medium to instructions, under qualified and untrained teachers and wrong system of evaluation process.
She also mentioned that there are five government primary schools and thirteen government middle schools in Mokokchung town alone, with nearly 2000 students enrolled, eighty percent of which are from the Eastern Naga villages, while dwelled on the present educational scenario of Mokokchung district.
In this regard, Limasenla urged the gatherers to dwell on ‘Each one teach one’ – the ‘African-American proverb’ which encourages for one educated or literate person to teach his/her fellow beings, which greatly helped in spreading education to among the black community in the United States. She further stated that the educated masses of the society – the students, college goers, educated house wives and even working professionals – have a task of educating the under privileged children in the society.
The Literacy Month Programme also witnessed an award presentation to teachers. The Rotary Club Mokokchung presented outstanding teacher’s awards to Wadangrenla of Jubilee Memorial School Mokokchung, Marbenla of Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, Temsulila of Edith Douglas Higher Secondary School and Imtinungla Longkumer of Town Higher Secondary School.
Three teachers were also awarded by Rotary India Literary Mission. The teachers are Wainenla of GPS Arjuma, K Bendangmeren of GPS Yimtsungda and Lanurenla, of GPS Langu.
