Dimapur, Dec. 29 (EMN): Emphasising that education does not end with earning academic degrees but “a lifelong process,” former minister and executive member of SCAN, Deo Nukhu, impressed upon the students to continue developing their skills even after their formal education.

Speaking at the 62nd general session of the Zhavame Students’ Union (ZSU) held on December 29 at the public amphitheatre ‘Pame Tsüdu’ in Zhavame village under Meluri sub-division of Phek district on the theme “Toward Proficiency,” he encouraged the students to broaden their horizons while choosing their careers and not just limit themselves to following the general trend of getting into government service.

Nukhu recalled the state of education in the village during their time and how it has progressed over the years especially in the last two decades. He stated that the growth of education is also visible in the development of the village in different areas.

Nukhu also called upon the students’ body to be a unifying factor in the village and also urged them to preserve the environment in the village by planting more trees.

It may be mentioned that Nukhu was the first graduate from Zhavame village in the year 1973 and subsequently taught at a government school in Meluri.

Deo Theodore Dukru Memorial Award, which was instituted in the year 2018 in memory of former headmaster, Deo Theodore Dukru, was presented to Zasi Pohena, teacher of GMS Zhavame, on the occasion. The award was given to the best performing teacher among four schools in Zhavame village.

Highlights of the event included invocation by Rev. Akha Shupao, pastor of Zhavame Baptist Church; presidential address by Muvi Domeh; greetings by Zao Krocha, village council chairman of Zhavame; general Secretary report by Dune Domeh; and benediction by Dakhru Rhi, pastor of Zhavame Christian Revival Church.
