Three schools from Kohima district were declared ‘Tobacco free schools’ during the second quarterly meeting of District Level Committee on Tobacco Control (DLCC) held at DC’s Conference Hall, Kohima on September 23.
Mezhur Higher Secondary School, Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School and Holy Family School were declared ‘Tobacco free schools’ as the schools fulfilled the criteria of the national guidelines on ‘Tobacco free school’. ADC Kohima, Lithrongla Tongpi gave away the certificates to the schools’ representatives and congratulated them for the success.
State Nodal Officer and Joint Director Health & Family Welfare, Kohima, Dr. H. Chishi, while congratulating the schools on behalf of the department, thanked the administration and the members of the committee for their guidance and cooperation.
He also emphasised on the importance of ‘Tobacco free school’ as the school children were unable to understand the reality of how the tobacco company has been aggressively attacking them. He said that the ministry of health & family welfare has stepped up its initiative to reduce the use of tobacco in order to protect the children from this aggressive menace.
District Nodal Officer (NTCP) Kohima, Dr. Arenla Walling gave a power-point presentation on the activities report of the District Tobacco Control Cell, Kohima.
Official report said, the meeting chaired by ADC Lithrongla also reviewed the first quarterly DLCC meeting minutes and discussed the agendas including reaching out strategies to police personnel, awareness programmes – rural focus, tobacco cessation centre – NRT stock insufficient and Bppan on sale and consumption of tobacco product in all gatherings as per notification.
