The Zunheboto District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) has agreed to hold seminar in the churches and schools to propagate about environmental awareness.
The decision to hold seminar in churches and school was taken during its monthly meeting on June 9 under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner and vice chairman DPDB Zunheboto, L Akato Sema.
In the meeting, Divisional Forest Officer, Zhekuto Zhimo, gave a power point presentation on global ecological imbalances caused by human waste and de-forestation that leads to environmental pollution such as drought, flood and storm etc. which contributes to global warming threatening human survival.
In encouraging the members on plantation of trees and bamboos, he said cultivation of 1 hectare bamboo plant could absorbs at least 17 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Deliberating on the matter, DC Zunheboto has encouraged the members to put emphasis on plantation of trees including the flowering plants in the town areas which would be good for environment as well as for promotion of tourism.
In regard to the proposal for NLCPR/ NEC Projects under Transport and Communication for construction of 27 km road from Luthsumi junction – Satami – Asuto EAC Headquarter, the members discussed and agreed to recommend the proposal to the higher authority. The members also discussed on launching of FM Radio Station in the district to enable the villagers in the far flung areas informed about the current issues such as environment, good sanitation, cultivation and so on. The members agreed to request the All India Radio, Kohima, for opening the same.
DSCO Zunheboto, Zhekheto Awomi, has highlighted the problem faced by the Lizutomi villagers under Aghunato Sub-Division where the villagers could not sow the paddy crops due to scanty rain fall in the current year. He, therefore, requested the board members to provide assistances to the inhabitants.
Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) was requested to give a power-point presentation in the next DPDB meeting. The Department was also requested to improve the road conditions and drainages in Zunheboto town. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the chair.
