The World Sight Day is globally observed on the second Thursday of October every year since 2000.This year, it falls on the 10th October which is the 25th occasion of the World Sight Day. It was initiated by the WHO with the objectives of enhancing public awareness on prevention of various eye problems and control curable blindness.

This year’s objectives are to focus the World’s attention on the importance of eye care in young people and inspiring children everywhere to love their eyes. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has chosen the theme “Love your Eyes, Kids” for the World Sight Day 2024.

In our State Nagaland, eye testing facilities are available in all the districts hospitals and CHCs and PHCs, where Para Medical Ophthalmic Assistants are posted. Certain important points needs to be emphasised regarding eye care.

1.            Get your eyes tested if you have blurred vision, unequal vision in both eyes, persistent headaches or dizziness.

2.            If wearing glasses, get it re-tested every one year if below 40 years and every two years if above40 years (or earlier in case of any complaints).

3.            Do not use contact lenses without professional guidance.

4.            Do not ignore minor injuries to the eye. Get prompt medical attention.

5.            Do not use eye medication without prescription.

6.            Do not use old/expired/used eye drops/ointments.

7.            Use protection goggles while working with grinders, drillers, cutting machines, etc.
