Wokha court convicts one for attempted extortion

DIMAPUR— The Court of Judicial Magistrate, Wokha, has convicted and sentenced one Abenthung Kikon to one year simple imprisonment for commission of attempt to extort under Section 385 of the IPC, for mischief under section 427 IPC to simple imprisonment of six months and for criminal intimidation under section 506 (I) IPC to simple imprisonment of six months.

The sentences of imprisonment shall run concurrently, the order stated.

The accused was arrested for attempted extortion, criminal intimidation and mischief causing fear to the victim (Sumo driver) and the passengers, forceful stoppage of one passenger and demand of ransom money and damage caused to the windshield of the vehicle, the order read.

The assistant public prosecutor K Renpemo Tungoe in a judgement said that, “Bearing in mind the galloping trend of commission of extortion which are taking place everywhere very commonly and that if the convict is not punished adequately; he shall not have the fear psyche of not repeating such offence.”
