Three people were arrested Friday in connection with an attack here on two youths from Nagaland, police said.
Aloto Chishi alias Sukoy and Awana alias James, working in a call centre here, were injured when they were attacked Wednesday night in Sikanderpur area here near the Mehrauli border.
“Police arrested Gaurav Yadav alias Pony, 23, and his two tenants Ram Bihari and Vijay Kumar for attempt to murder,” Nazneen Bhasin, deputy commissioner of police (east), told reporters.
Bhasin, who is also chief nodal officer for crime against people from northeast region, said the victims live as tenants in the home of Yadav’s cousin.
“Nagaland youths Wednesday night had scuffle over some issue with Yadav but they reached a settlement. Gaurav invited Sukoy and James to have drinks in the room of his tenant.
“The youths were attacked when they refused to have more drinks and were held hostage for whole night,” she said.
Ram Bihari hails from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh while Vijay Kumar is from Nadia district in West Bengal, the officer said. Both are in their 20s.
The arrested people were Friday presented in a court, which sent them to judicial custody.
The Naga youths – in the age group of 22 to 25 years – were admitted to a state-run hospital here. James was later shifted to a hospital in Delhi as his condition was stated to be critical.

Zeliang, Rio demand action against perpetrators of hate crimes

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 17

Expressing concern over the brutal and unprovoked attack on two Naga youth at Sikanderpur village in Gurgaon on the night of October 15, Chief Minister TR Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio demanded that the perpetrators of the crime must be given exemplary punishment.
In a letter to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today, Zeliang made an earnest appeal to ensure that the guilty are arrested and brought to book. He also urged Hooda to take all steps to prevent such inhuman acts.
Zeliang said it is a matter of great disappointment that people from the North East region of our country are being subjected to such attacks. It is indeed a matter of immense concern that such acts of racial attacks continue with impunity, he rued.
Expressing concern that hate crimes against the people of the north eastern region are on the rise all over the country, especially in the metropolitan cities and the national capital region, Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio urged the government of India to take immediate action and also undertake all necessary measures that will reassure that the citizens of the north eastern region are equal citizens of this nation.
Rio said two persons from the North East, specifically Nagaland, were brutally assaulted and the assailants attempted to murder them in Gurgaon and on October 15, a youth from the region was attacked in Bangalore for not speaking the local language.
Stating that these incidents of hate crime deserve to be condemned by every right thinking citizen of the country, Rio demanded that the perpetrators of the crimes must be given exemplary punishment in the greater interest of the country’s unity and integrity.
The victims must be appropriately compensated, cared and rehabilitated and the region must be reassured or else the consequences of neglect and inaction will be detrimental to the national interest of our country, Rio said in a release today.
He said the country must win back the trust of the people of the North East and the matter must be approached as a grave national issue.
Rio said it is indeed unfortunate and sad to observe that citizens of the country are being treated and attacked like foreign nationals and enemies of the nation. “In fact, the perpetrators of racist hate crimes must be considered enemies of the nation and punished accordingly,” he stated.
“The country must wake up to the reality of the situation and act in a firm and urgent manner,” he added.
Pointing out that these criminal and the persons who have such a racist attitude are attacking the principles, believes and assurances of the Constitution of India, Rio said racism against our own citizens is abuse of our nationhood and against the idea of India as enshrined in the preamble to the Constitution.

GUWAHATI, OCTOBER 17

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju Friday said the central government was determined to take action against the perpetrators of violence against people from northeast in other parts of India.
“We are not going to tolerate this. Whenever such an incident occurs, our government has taken action and we are determined about it,” he told media here.
Rijiju’s comment came after two youth from Nagaland were assaulted in Gurgaon Wednesday night while a student from Manipur was beaten up by a group of people in Bangalore for not speaking in Kannada.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condemned the attacks on youths from the northeast region and demanded stern action.
Such attacks “are most despicable and reprehensible. Such racial attacks prevent them (youths from northeast) from coming into the mainstream”, Gogoi said.
