Severe storm causes widespread damage in Nagaland
DIMAPUR — High-speed winds accompanied by hailstorm, lightning and thunder wreaked havoc in Dimapur and its surrounding areas on Wednesday afternoon, uprooting trees and damaging houses and properties.
Though there were no reports of casualties, the gusty winds damaged power lines and snapped cable line across Dimapur and its surrounding areas, including Niuland.
There were reports of vehicles being damaged as trees and heavy branches fell on them. The wind also uprooted several trees, blew away GI sheets roofs and damaged electric poles at several locations.
Safety steel ropes and the hoardings along the flyover near the Dimapur Railway Station also collapsed because of the storm.
Soon after the storm subsided, the Dimapur Power department staff pressed into action, clearing the branches of fallen trees and taking stock of the damages.
According to the department, some of the feeders that were affected by the storm included 33kV Supermarket, 33kV Padampukhuri, 11kV Thilixu 1, 2, and Chekiye, 33kV Metha, and 66kV Power house, Nito, Dairy.
Meanwhile, the office of the Deputy Commisioner of Niuland informede that the district experienced thunderstorm with lightning and rainfall on Wednesday evening, rendering many people homeless as houses were damaged by fallen trees and roofs blown away by strong winds at several locations.
There were also widespread damage to electricity poles, causing disruption in power supply, said the update.
