Teachers unofficially attached to departments and MLAs, it alleges

DIMAPUR— The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has asked the directorate of School Education (DoSE) to redeploy ‘transferred teachers’ to their respective places of postings within 17 days, citing acute shortage of educators in its jurisdiction.

In a letter to the principle director of DoSE, the USSC said that it conducted an educational tour under its jurisdiction from April 13 to June 3 with an aim to ensure quality education to students.

It was found out during the interactive sessions with both teaching and non-teaching faculties, regarding the grievances encountered by the schools and students, that “poor infrastructure including classroom facilities, poor sanitation and hygiene, and insufficient textbooks, laboratories, and computers” were causing severe consequences on students, ranging from poor academic performance to health concerns.

The non replacement of teachers after being transferred to other districts has resulted in a significant shortage of teachers in the region, which is adversely affecting students’ academic performance, it stated.

“It has also been learned that 28 schools under Sangtam jurisdiction are operating without Hindi, Science, and Mathematics teachers,” it stated.

Also alleging that some teachers were unofficially attached to departments and elected legislators, which is directly hampering the future of students, the USSC warned the concerned authorities against such practice and asked to detach them with immediate effect.

The student body went on to say that failing to deploy the required teachers within 17 days will compel it “to go for a democratic agitation and if any unwanted situation arises the concerned department shall hold solely responsible and accountable”.
