DIMAPUR, JULY 17: TO promote peace, unity and brotherhood, Department of Philosophy and Religion of Salesian College, Dimapur, organised a day-long seminar on the theme “Religious tolerance: Challenges and prospects,” with emphasis on the issue of religious tolerance, co-existence and freedom of expression on July 16.
Speaking on the occasion, Salesian College principal, Fr. Policarp Xalxo, exhorted the participants to take a step forward from mere toleration of other religions and begin to love and respect the good values that are present in them.
Keynote speaker and vice principal of Salesian College, Sonada, in Darjeeling, Rev. Fr. Noby George, said historically India has been a country that has given birth and nurtured a number of world religions. He also said India stands as an example to the world as a country of tolerance and religious freedom. He, however, said precaution should be taken as some fundamentalist forces could become sources of religious divisions.
Assistant professor, Rev. Br. Jerry, while presenting on topic “Harmony in religious pluralism: A Panikkarian perspective,” emphasised the need to discover the integral union that lies hidden among various religions of the world.
Students of Philosophy (Honours) also presented four papers on meaning and relevance of religious tolerance and dialogue as a way out for religious intolerance and disharmony in the present day society.
The programme concluded with a dance based on the theme, inter-religious harmony. More than 200 students participated in the seminar.
