DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 12

NAGALAND Police under the aegis of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi, organized its 10th Nagaland Police State Level Debate Competition on Human Rights with the topic ‘Human Rights & Social Justice is devalued in Naga Society’.
Director General of Police (DGP), Nagaland Besesayo Kezo (IPS) in his keynote address said, issues of human rights are as old as human beings on earth where the stronger has always exploited the weaker person.
He said, police department with its failure in solving the pending cases of human rights are considered as the most accused department and considered as the ‘violator’ and not the ‘protector’.
He felt, Nagas may be intellectually aware of human rights violation but the problem of implementation in the right way becomes the problem.
The Nagaland police under NHRC has been initiating the debate competition on human rights since 2005 with its objective of bringing awareness to the people of the State.
The DGP also brought to light that the NGOs of Nagaland who claim to be working for the society are least aware of what exactly human rights are.
Kezo noted that human rights are universal where the rights of others should also be sought instead of seeking rights for oneself only.
‘Human Rights should be preserved, protected and promoted’, said Kezo.
Altogether 11 participants from all over the state took part in the debate.
The winner of the debate was given away to ‘Against the motion’ while the winner of the individual category was UBSI Athiubo Zeliang, DEF Wokha with 14 points earned while the 2nd prize was given to ABSI Mhonyam Kikon 13 NAP (IR) Bn who has been the winner for two consecutive years with 13.33 points.
