DIMAPUR — Phek district commemorated the 70th All India Cooperative Week with enthusiasm during a programme held at Phek town council hall on November 20 on the theme “Role of cooperatives in making India a $5 trillion economy and achieving sustainable development goals (SDG).”

The special guest, Kuko Mero, who is also the deputy commissioner of Phek, urged the people of Phek district to harness the benefits of cooperative societies. He has emphasised the potential on cultivating vast agricultural lands through cooperative initiatives by enabling diverse forms of agricultural farming.

Elaborating on the significance of cooperative societies, Mero has appreciated the farmers in the district for actively involved in various forms of farming. He highlighted success stories within the district and also commended the achievements made by the farmers.

The special guest made special reference on success stories from cooperative societies in mainland India by citing instances where extensive cultivations of sugarcane and almonds were successfully undertaken through cooperative policies. He urged the farming communities to earnestly embrace the principles of cooperative societies for increased production and sales.

The programme was chaired by Jacob Khing, SRCS of Phek. It featured presentation on the significance of the day delivered by Kivi Ritse, while a song was presented by Mathu Farming Cooperative Society Ltd. from Upper Khomi village in Phek.

A farmer from Tsapvuri Cooperative Society Ltd. in Phokhungri town under Meluri sub-division of Phek district shared a success story.

An invocation prayer was said by Moses T Fithu of Zhupu Baptist Church abd concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Tsuknungwati.
