DIMAPUR, MARCH 29

A one-day state level students’ seminar on “Bioethics: Issues and challenges”, was organized here today by the department of Philosophy, ICFAI University, Dimapur. Students of Salesian Collage, Patkai Christian College and ICFAI University delivered paper presentations on the topics of abortion, organ transplantation and euthanasia.
At the inaugural session, the publisher of Heritage Publishing House, Dr Lanusangla Tzudir also spoke on “the relevance of Philosophy in contemporary times.” In her brief address, Tzudir remarked that in this age of technology, the general tendency has been to criticize philosophy as subjective and a dead subject.
It has even been dismissed as an escape from reality “without serving the modern man”, she said. This is a misconception because philosophy is the only discipline which still continues to show concern for humanity, human lives and ethics, Tzudir said.
“Our life is philosophy, and conversely, philosophy is life,” she said, and argued that the relevance of philosophy (and ethics) is today manifested in the societal and moral orders that confront us. “Therein lays the credibility and relevance of philosophy.”
The second session was chaired by DR RK Behera, dean of Social Sciences at Patkai Christian College. The pro-vice chancellor of ICFAI University also presented a brief introduction to the seminar.
