The Nagaland Pollution Control Board conducted a workshop on waste management on Friday in the premises of its office in Dimapur. 62 student-nurses and members of the faculty of Nursing College, Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research, in Dimapur, attended the event.
The Nagaland Pollution Control Board is a statutory body entrusted to implement environmental laws and rules within the jurisdiction of the state of Nagaland.
The programme included a powerpoint presentation on “Recycling and its Benefits” was given by Mhasizonuo Angami, Assistant Programme Officer, on which the students were introduced on how recycling helps in protecting the environment and also in reducing waste. In her presentation the students were given a brief introduction of recycle and examples were cited. “Think before you throw” because every small/ little steps you take in minimizing waste will be a big benefit for the future generation.
Yanathung Kithan, Sr. Scientific Assistant, gave a powerpoint presentation on Municipal Solid Waste Management. He stressed on the production of waste and the importance of segregation and proper management. The students were given a brief idea about how solid waste is effecting our environment and ways to manage the waste. A short animation on human activities in destroying our environment was also shown.
A power point presentation on Bio-Medical Waste management was given by Akangmeren Imchen, scientist B. According to various surveys and reports, only 10-15 percent of total waste generated by hospitals is infectious and needs treatment.
Imchen said that the rest falls under the category of general waste and does not need any treatment. If all the waste is mixed, the entire waste generated from a hospital becomes infected. As the quantity of waste to be treated increases, the hospital fails to treat all its waste and a large chunk of this infectious waste reaches municipal dumps, and increases the possibility of spreading infection, he added.
After the programme the students were given demonstration on various activities and programmes undertaken by the office. The students were given hindsight on the monitoring of air and water quality. They were also given a practical demonstration on paper recycling and its reuse.
For those who do not know, waste management is the name for the collection, transportation, and disposal or recycling and monitoring of waste. This term is assigned to the material, waste material that is produced through human being activity. This material is managed to avoid its adverse effect over human health and environment.
