KOHIMA, OCTOBER 29: Former Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and former president of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Z Lohe, has sought prior attention of all the people to address four major concerns plaguing the society namely on education, election, corruption and Naga nationalism.
Speaking as the guest speaker at the 69th foundation day of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) today at Kohima, Z Lohe, said NSF has to pay due attention to these issues on priority with due responsibility.
NSF being a student body, Lohe asserted that the welfare of the students should be its priority. He reminded that its press statement issued in March stating ‘the education system in Nagaland has degenerated’ had touched the right chord.
Stating that education system in Nagaland has been in shambles and in a very pathetic condition, Lohe said the system, in toto, has become a matter of deep concern. Reminding the students body that issuing a condemnation and press statements are not enough, Lohe said persuasion is required to make things right.
Citing some examples, Lohe alleged that things are going on rampantly and managed haphazardly with the authorities not paying due concerned to their assignments.
‘The type of education that is imparted to our gullible children is in a mess. We may or may not know the factors that have adversely affected the system,’ he alleged and strongly asserted that we cannot afford to remain a silent spectator and allow the system to continue.
Terming elections as another matter of deep concern in the State starting right from college students’ election to municipal and the State assembly elections, Lohe opined it has become abominable. ‘When human beings are bereft of sense of shame, fear and taboo, he/she is no more a human being,’ Lohe said and urged the NSF not to remain mute on these challenges.
Lohe also noted with regret that ‘Corruption’ has become a way of life and that people are no more sensitive to the issue. Observing that Naga people have become immune to laws, Lohe said people who raise their voice against corruption are branded as ‘desperate lot.’
Narrating the struggle for Naga independence leading to the signing of the Shillong Accord, Lohe remarked that the ‘negative reaction has become an overreaction’ thereby giving birth to the present mess into total chaos.
Terming formation of factions and groups as an industry in Nagaland, which has become ‘most lucrative and attractive centres in order to make fast bucks,’ he has attributed the outcome to frustration in which people were misled and misguided.
Taking into account all these issues, Lohe challenged the NSF to realise the things that are going wrong in the society and educate the gullible young generation to call ‘a spade a spade.’
Also exhorting the gathering, Zaky Tsükrü, former NSF president, urged the NSF to always work for the glory and greater benefit of the Naga society as a whole and not to be brainwashed or carried away to any political party, tribalism or self-motivated interest.
Paying rich tribute to the founding members and pioneers of the Federation, NSF president, Subenthang Kithan, has appreciated their vision and far-sightedness for laying a strong foundation.
The programme chaired by Neizokhotuo Belho, former NSF general secretary, commenced with an invocation said by Kechyesin Keppen, Youth Director of Police Baptist Church, New Reserve, Kohima.
A one minute silent was also observed in memory of the departed student leaders. The programme saw the attendance of former leaders and various tribal students’ leaders.
