KOHIMA— The Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, has granted the state government four weeks’ time to submit the compliance report with regard to proposal for creation of 342 posts of teaching and non-teaching staff for the much-awaited Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), which is expected to begin first academic session this year.

The Health and Family Welfare department had earlier submitted the proposal to the government for consideration and approval, for which response is awaited.

“It has been submitted by the respondent side that the proposal for the creation of 342 posts of teaching and non-teaching staff has been submitted to the Government for consideration and approval which is awaited,” the court stated during the hearing of the matter on Wednesday.

However, the learned Additional AG submitted that the matter is under consideration by the government and sought some more time to obtain instruction on the progress.

The court, upon hearing the learned counsel of the respondent and petitioner, granted four weeks’ time to the respondent to submit the compliance report.

The matter has been listed for next hearing after four weeks.

It may be noted that the respondents had prayed for the corresponding request in the last hearing in May. The Court order on May 10 stated that respondents, in their affidavit, indicated that the proposal for the creation of 342 teaching as well as non-teaching staff for the medical college in Kohima has been put up to the government, which is under consideration.

When the matter was taken up for hearing again on Wednesday, Justice Kakheto Sema asked how long it would take to create the said posts, saying that ‘it cannot be in the proposal stage every time’.

The Additional AG for the state respondents, Imti Imsong, however, sought for more time to take instruction from the department. He added that the department of Health and Family Welfare would start admission for the first batch at the newly established medical college in August.

It may be noted that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the NIMSR site on Tuesday to oversee the progress of the building construction work. While assuring additional funds for the timely completion of the project, he expressed hope that the infrastructure would soon be ready for classes to begin this academic year 2023-2024.

The National Medical Commission has paved the way for the state’s first medical college to start functioning this year by giving the Letter of Permission (LoP) for 100 MBBS seats.
